Spring 2011 — New Literacies

To prepare students for the future, schools and especially teachers must teach students many new literacies and life skills.

  • Critical thinking
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Communication
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Self-directed learning
  • Financial and economic
  • Problem-solving
  • Leadership and responsibility
  • Civic and health
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Global awareness
  • Media and technology
  • Social and cross-cultural
  • Accountability

Pedagogy
How will teaching these new literacies change the role of teachers inside and outside of the classroom? What role will traditional teaching methods play? How can educators best learn these literacies that they will teach to their students?

Administration
How will schools support teachers who need teach these new literacies? Are there new marketing opportunities for schools that are specialists in teaching new literacy? How do schools inform parents about the new skills being taught?

Do you have an article idea that fits with this theme?
Article proposals for Dialogue should be brief—one type-written page or less—and include your full name; current position; home and work addresses; work and home telephone numbers; email address; and a brief bio that includes any qualifications. We are accepting proposals for the 2011 edition of Dialogue until April 30, 2010.

Editorial procedure
Our Editorial Advisory Board review all submissions. All reference to your identity, organization or school will be removed from article proposals prior to reviewing. After notification of your article acceptance the editor will work with you to establish a detailed article outline, finalize the length and deadline details before you proceed with the actual writing. The subsequent editing process will involve at least one more conversation, copy-edit, final review and sign-off by you, the author. We will do our best to reply to all proposals in a timely fashion.

Suggested Future Themes
Below are some comments that we heard at our last editorial advisory board meeting for Dialogue magazine and Dialogue Online. Please share your comments, feedback and ideas.

"The use of technology in schools is changing so quickly. It might be an area you want to cover in every issue."

"School marketing. Every school is always struggling with how to market themselves and increase enrolment."
