Congratulations Mr Nichols in your successful use of technology in your classroom and the unique way you are tiying both the past and present together.

There have been some studies done regarding students being isolated with the use of technology and suffering from social deprivation as they work alone with hand held devices.

How do you overcome this issue in your classroom?

I recently finished editing a book written primarily for boys as a vehicle to stimulate interest in science. It is set in the near future and is an adventure story with slightly futuristic technology based on science principles we understand today. As a science educator I am looking forward to the reaction from a teen audience. The adults who have read it already have enjoyed the story.

Since it lends itself readily to the incorporation of technology into its curriculum, mathematics, fairly or unfairly, continues to be the 'canary in the coal mine' for the balance of the subject disciplines.

All subject disciplines are grappling with the issue of embedded technology.

The power of technology lies in its ability to leverage more advanced contexts than could be undertaken otherwise. This is a compelling and seductive argument for its use.

The caution, on the other hand, is that technology fosters dependency, and educators must ask themselves at what point, and to what depth, are they comfortable with the cycle of dependency to begin.

One of the pillars of 21st C learning is mastery of the core STEM subjects. Not sure how this is

nonsense. Only Scotland, so far as I can see, has full requirements through the graduation year, (perhaps IB is close, but misses on many other counts) including the very practical subjects. Our independent schools do not have such standards.

Teamwork, peer tutoring and brain-based learning are also absent from most boards. They are key to 21st C learning. Nonsense?

ICT is an element of 21st C learning as was the pen for 19th C learning. Mastering neither is or was the goal. Learning always has been. We haven't found the formula just yet, but for the students' sake, we need to find it soon.

The debate is a good one.

I think we have had success here in Ontario and that full-day kindergarten is a good idea in theory, but not for all kids. I think too that our investment on full-day kindergarten has come at great cost to many other groups and schools. Kids with special needs have greater needs and bigger numbers than ever, but they are served less and less because of funding constraints and they are often being forced IMHO to homeschooling as a result. They are forgotten and squeezed out of the system that claims to be inclusive. That is an outrage. We have schools that are falling apart and contain double the enrollment the school is intended for. But again these schools are being ignored because of funding constraints. There are huge issues still with bullying in schools and too many adults continue to complicate that situation.

We have large issues that are still getting worse, but there appears to be no commitment to these things.
